Introducing THE FINAL.

Indiana high school hockey has no shortage of stories.

They play out every week in rinks across the state — in late-night practices, rivalry games, overtime finishes, breakout seasons and final runs for seniors who have spent much of their lives playing the sport.

What it has lacked is consistent coverage.

THE FINAL. is being built to help change that.

Launching ahead of the 2026–27 season, THE FINAL. is a new independent sports publication focused on high school athletics. Its first major beat will be Indiana boys high school hockey, with plans to expand into additional sports and markets over time.

The goal is straightforward: provide more meaningful coverage of athletes, teams and communities that often receive little attention beyond scores, schedules and social media.

That starts this fall with hockey. High school hockey occupies an unusual place in Indiana sports.

The state has established programs, long-running rivalries and players competing at a high level, but the sport sits outside much of the traditional high school sports media ecosystem.

Local newspapers have fewer reporters than they once did. Broadcast coverage naturally gravitates toward sports with the largest audiences. In many cases, information about a team is spread across league websites, individual team accounts and word of mouth.

There is plenty of information.

There is far less journalism.

THE FINAL. will focus on the space between the two.

Coverage during the inaugural season will include game stories, features, photography, interviews, rankings, analysis and video from programs across Indiana.

The intention is not to cover every game played in the state. At least not initially.

Instead, THE FINAL. will focus on telling the stories that matter — important matchups, emerging players, compelling teams and the people behind the sport.

A championship game deserves coverage.

So does a program trying to establish itself.

A four-goal night is a story.

So is the senior playing his final season with teammates he has known since youth hockey.

The scoreboard provides the result. The job of THE FINAL. is to provide the rest.

A sports publication, not a hockey publication

Although hockey will be the primary focus at launch, THE FINAL. is being developed as a broader sports publication.

The long-term opportunity extends well beyond one sport.

High school athletics have changed dramatically while the infrastructure covering them has moved in the opposite direction. Newsrooms have contracted, dedicated prep sports coverage has become harder to sustain, and much of the day-to-day storytelling around high school athletics now happens through schools, teams, parents and athletes themselves.

Those platforms serve an important purpose, but they are not a replacement for independent sports coverage.

THE FINAL. intends to build within that gap.

Indiana hockey provides a focused place to start, learn and establish the model before expanding into other high school sports.

The principles will remain the same when that happens: strong storytelling, credible coverage, good photography and an emphasis on the people behind the games.

Building a new reporting network

THE FINAL. will also take a different approach to how that coverage is produced.

Alongside experienced contributors, the publication is launching THE FINAL. Press Corps, a paid contributor program for high school students interested in journalism, photography, broadcasting and sports media.

Students selected for the program will cover games and stories in their local communities while receiving professional editing, published bylines or photo credits and work they can use in college and career portfolios.

They will also be paid for their assignments.

The Press Corps is designed to serve two purposes.

First, it creates a way for THE FINAL. to build local coverage across a state where teams may be separated by several hours.

More importantly, it gives aspiring journalists and creators an opportunity that has become increasingly difficult to find: the chance to do real work for a real publication.

A student interested in sports journalism should have an opportunity to walk into a rink with a credential, interview a coach after a game, file a story on deadline and see their name attached to published work.

The same is true for a young photographer learning how to capture a game or a student interested in video and broadcasting.

For some, THE FINAL. may simply be a way to cover a sport they enjoy.

For others, it could be the first line on a résumé.

What comes next

The first season will be a building year.

Coverage will grow as contributors are added throughout Indiana. Some ideas will work. Others will change. New features will be introduced as the season develops.

The publication will also depend heavily on the hockey community itself.

Players, parents, coaches, administrators and fans often know where the best stories are long before anyone covering the sport does. Story ideas, noteworthy performances and information from programs across the state will help shape what THE FINAL. covers.

There is no shortage of places to begin.

The first puck of the season has not dropped yet, but teams are already preparing for what comes next.
