Friday Night Roundup: HSE, South Stars and Munster Red pick up tournament wins.
Indiana teams turned in wins across Michigan, Ohio and Indiana as tournament play got underway Friday.
Indiana teams spread across several tournaments Friday, with HSE, South Stars and Munster Red earning varsity wins and Marian-Riley opening its Michiana scrimmage schedule with an 8-1 victory over Adams.
Columbus recovered from an early shutout loss to beat Piedmont later in the day, while Carmel and Westfield each came up one goal short. On the JV side, Carmel Blue defeated HSE JV, Munster White JV edged South Stars JV, and Central Indiana fell to Michigan Steel White.
HSE 5, Canton-Akron 3
HSE erased an early deficit with three goals in the second period and added two short-handed goals in the third to beat Canton-Akron 5-3.
Canton-Akron led 1-0 after the first and extended its advantage early in the second before Evan Swann and Madden Houck scored to tie it. Calix Clarke gave HSE its first lead before Canton-Akron answered to make it 3-3 entering the third.
Jackson Morris scored the game-winner short-handed at 13:08 of the third, and Quintin Borgert added another short-handed goal at 2:49.
Finley Jones earned the win as HSE outshot Canton-Akron 41-17.
South Stars 4, West Michigan Huskies 2
Four different South Stars players scored in a 4-2 win over the West Michigan Huskies.
Easton May opened the scoring before West Michigan tied it with 12 seconds remaining in the first.
Garnet Hauk and Luke Romine scored in the second to put South Stars ahead 3-1. West Michigan pulled within one in the third, but Benjamin Gettum answered less than a minute later to restore the two-goal advantage.
Grady Parsons earned the win in goal.
Munster Red 4, Affton Americans 2
Ethan Lopez recorded a hat trick as Munster Red beat the Affton Americans 4-2.
Lopez scored twice in the first, while Kyle O'Rourke added another to give Munster a 3-0 advantage. Affton cut the lead to 3-1 before the intermission.
Lopez completed the hat trick in the second, and Munster carried the 4-1 lead into the third before Affton added the game's final goal.
Alexander Bogner earned the win in net.
Marian-Riley 8, Adams 1
Marian-Riley scored eight unanswered goals after falling behind early in an 8-1 win over Adams.
Keegan Modlin gave Adams a 1-0 lead at 12:12 of the first. Jake Follmer tied it for Marian-Riley before Gentree O'Reilly put MRHC ahead for good.
Jace Gist, Ian Rowland and Evan Stevens scored in the second. Bennett Bogue scored twice in the third, with Timothy Pope adding another.
Brody Kucera and Julie Olson split the game in goal for Marian-Riley.
Columbus splits Friday doubleheader
Columbus opened with a 5-0 loss to the SHAHA Panthers before responding with a 3-1 win over the Piedmont Predators.
SHAHA scored three times in the first and twice in the second of the opener.
Against Piedmont, Quinten Grider gave Columbus a 1-0 first-period lead. Jonah Broderick and Blake Schneider scored in the second to extend the margin to 3-0 before Piedmont got one back in the third.
Gabriel Marsh played both games in goal and earned the win against Piedmont.
Hilliard 3, Carmel 2
Carmel fell just short in a 3-2 loss to Hilliard.
Tal Schlueter gave Carmel a 1-0 lead in the first before Liam Fairbanks tied it.
The game remained 1-1 until the third, when Mason Stoessner and Jack Clevenger scored for Hilliard. Carmel's Landon Stankiewicz answered with 1:18 remaining, but Carmel couldn't find the tying goal.
Nolan Deady made 28 saves for Carmel.
Dayton 2, Westfield 1
Westfield goaltender Dalton Giddings stopped 38 of 40 shots, but Dayton scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 win.
Dylan Thornburg gave Westfield a 1-0 lead late in the first.
Feenux Parrish tied it at 12:33 of the second before Alec Pennington scored the eventual game-winner at 3:44.
Westfield was outshot 40-21.
Carmel Blue JV 5, HSE JV 1
Carmel Blue scored the game's first two goals and went on to beat HSE JV 5-1.
Coal Callahan and Jackson Kohan gave Carmel a 2-0 advantage before Brady Anderson scored for HSE with 2:28 remaining in the first.
Platon Denisov, Angelo Landrigan and Evan Potash added second-period goals to put the game away.
Colin Williams earned the win for Carmel Blue despite HSE holding a 28-26 advantage in shots.
Munster White JV 1, South Stars JV 0
Lowell Werner scored the game's only goal with 7:57 remaining in the third as Munster White defeated South Stars 1-0.
John Rybicki Jr. recorded the shutout for Munster, while McKennon Taylor allowed just one goal for South Stars.
Michigan Steel White 3, Central Indiana Knights 0
Central Indiana's JV team fell 3-0 to Michigan Steel White at Big Boy Arena in Michigan.
